Beauty That Never Fades

Standard

…the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit
is of great worth in God’s sight.
1 Peter 3:4b

Most of us spend a great deal of time and money on our outward appearance.  A portion of our day is devoted to preparing ourselves for “public appearance.”  We spend time grooming, shaving, tweezing, moisturizing, drying, brushing, combing, and powdering.  We carefully apply make-up and select our outfit and coordinating accessories.  For some of us, this is a time-consuming process and one that we would never omit from our day.  When we are finally ready to step out of our homes, every detail is in perfect order, from the tops of our heads to the tips of our toes.

While we care deeply about the image we portray to the world, God’s word tells us in 1 Peter 3:3-4 that what matters most is not your outward appearance – the styling of your hair, the jewelry you wear or the cut of your clothes.  What He cares about is your inner disposition.

 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.
Rather, it should be that of your inner self,  the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” 1 Peter 3:3-4

Just as we devote a portion of our day to taking care of our outward appearance, we should also spend time attending to our inner self.  The more time you spend reading God’s word and talking with Him in prayer, the more you will radiate His spirit from within.  Your relationship with Christ will be evident in your attitude, your words, your actions and your gentle spirit.  You will shine with a light from within, and others will be drawn to Christ.

 “Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.” Psalm 34:5

True beauty begins inside.

Abundant Blessings

And God is able to
Bless you abundantly,
So that in all things
At all times,
Having all that you need,
You will abound in every good work.
2 Corinthians 9:8

God is more than able to pour on the blessings in astonishing ways so that you’re ready for anything and everything He calls you to do in life.  Never think that He will not equip you to accomplish a task He desires for you to do.  In fact, with God’s blessings you will be more than ready to do what needs to be done.  Not only does this most generous God give seed to the farmer that becomes bread for your meals, but also He provides all that you need to abound in all your work for His kingdom.

Don’t ever let a “lack of resources” hold you back from stepping forward in faith to accomplish a great calling from God.  His rich storehouse is brimming with blessings that He desires to pour out upon His children in order to fulfill His divine purposes.  Trust in God to be your blessing provider!

Standing Firmly on the Rock

Standard

He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
    out of the mud and mire;
He set my feet on a rock
    and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
    a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
    and put their trust in Him.

Psalm 40:2–3

 When you experience a season of emotional or physical upheaval in life, it is easy to begin feeling like you are trapped in a deep, dark, slimy pit filled with mud and mire.  Your footings are unstable and no matter what you do to try and pull yourself out of this dismal situation, you seem to slip right back down to the bottom.  Every step you take becomes bogged down in the thick quagmire of your problems.

 If you find yourself in a dark place like this in life, do not give into the feeling of hopelessness.  You are not alone!  There is no depth so deep that God is not watching over you.  There is no place so dark that His light cannot penetrate.  Nothing can ever separate you from His love.  Instead of trying to climb out of the pit on your own, call out to God, and He will hear your cry of despair.  Lift up your hands to your Heavenly Father and allow Him to lift you out of the mud and mire.

He will place your feet upon a solid Rock and give you a firm place to stand.  Even in the midst of tumultuous situations, you will have a solid foundation with God.  The winds of controversy may gust, and the stormy problems may howl, but you will remain firmly rooted in God’s love and protection.

The Lord will give you a new song to sing.  Your focus will turn from your problems and difficulties, and instead your thoughts will be centered on praising Our Savior.  Your life will be a testament to others.  They will see what God has done for you and be amazed.  As a result, many will also place their trust in the Lord.

Let your roots hold firmly to the Rock!  With Him you will never be shaken.

“Truly He is my rock and my salvation;
    He is my fortress, I will never be shaken.”

Psalm 62:2

Divine Rest

Standard

Capehart Sunnyside Barn - Version 2

“Come to me,

all you who are weary and burdened,

and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11: 28

Are you tired? Weary? Worn out? Burned out? Struggling?  Burdened?  Are you carrying a heavy load in your life?  Jesus offers a cure for your weariness.   His gentle calling says, “Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.(Matthew 11:28 – 30MSG)

Whether you are carrying burdens of guilt or a heavy load of life circumstances, Jesus promises to give you rest.  The type of rest that Jesus promises is love, healing and peace with God, not necessarily the end of all our problems.  God’s divine rest provides a feeling of peace that is beyond human understanding.  Jesus lifts the cares and troubles of everyday life off of our shoulders and bears them for us.  Answer His gentle call and allow Him to bless you with His brand of rest for your soul.

Truly my soul finds rest in God;

My salvation comes from him.

Psalm 62:1

Listen for His Song

The Lord your God is in your midst,
A Mighty One who will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness;
He will quiet you by His love;
He will exult over you with loud singing.
Zephaniah 3:17

Take a moment to let the words of this scripture penetrate your mind and permeate your heart.  The same Mighty God who created the universe is in your midst.  As His child you are never alone.  Your Heavenly Father is beside you every step of the way.  He is always present in your life.  When the going gets tough, He’s not going to bail out.

God loves you unconditionally.  He celebrates and sings because of YOU.  As a mom of three sons, I know how it feels to “rejoice” over my children.  Be assured that my voice will be the loudest one cheering in the stands whenever there’s a home run, touch down or game winning basket.  I also celebrate other accomplishments with them such as good grades on a report card, learning a new skill, or making the team.  Truthfully, I rejoice over my boys each morning when I wake them up and each time they walk in the door from school.  So if an earthly parent can have such joy over her children, I can’t imagine how much more our Heavenly Father, who created each and every one of us, rejoices over all His children.

When you are fearful, hurting or sad, He quiets you and comforts you with His love.  Our All-knowing, All-seeing, ever present Lord knows your every need and thought.  He senses the pain you may be feeling.  He knows your circumstances and understands your fears with complete clarity.  Just imagine His divine arms wrapped tightly around you, holding you, consoling you, reassuring you, soothing you and calming all your fears.

God’s word is true.  So we can believe without a doubt that the Mighty One who will save is in your midst.  He is rejoicing over you.  He is quieting you by His love.  And your Heavenly Father is singing loudly over you with joy.  Acknowledge His presence in your life.  Sense His joy and gladness over you.  Feel His comfort, and listen for His loud singing throughout your day.

God’s Answers

Standard

Each day untold numbers of negative thoughts can swirl through our heads.  It is often difficult to control those thoughts, but I have found that the best remedy for negative thinking is through God’s powerful and positive Word. When you feel discouraged, weak, too tied to go on, unloved, condemned, depleted, confused, incompetent, fearful, guilty, unsure, defeated, worried, sad, or alone, God has an answer for you.   Say these verses out loud until you have memorized them.  Repeat them to yourself each time that negative thought creeps into your mind.  God loves you unconditionally!  He speaks to you through His Word.  Listen to His voice of truth instead of the lies that may be playing on “auto-shuffle” in your mind.

Here are just a few examples to get you started:

God’s Answers to our Negative Thoughts:

YOU SAY GOD SAYS BIBLE VERSES
You say: ‘It’s impossible’ God says: All things are possible (Luke 18:27 NIV)27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” Luke 18:27
You say: ‘I’m too tired’ God says: I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28-30 NIV)28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
You say: ‘Nobody really loves me’ God says: I love you (John 3:16 NIV)16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
You say: ‘I can’t go on’ God says: My grace is sufficient (II Corinthians 12:9 & Psalm 91:15 NIV)II Corinthians 12:9

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

Psalm 91:15

15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.

You say:  ‘I can’t figure things out’ God says: I will direct your steps (Proverbs 3:5- 6)5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
You say: ‘I can’t do it’ God says: You can do all things (Philippians 4:13 NIV)I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
You say: ‘I’m not able’ God says: I am able (2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV)8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
You say: ‘It’s not worth it’ God says: It will be worth it (Roman 8:28 NIV)28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
You say: ‘I can’t forgive myself’ God says: I Forgive you (I John 1:9 & Romans 8:1 NIV)1 John 1:9

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness

19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

You say: ‘I’m afraid’ God says: I have not given you a spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7)New International Version (NIV)

7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

You say: ‘I’m always worried and frustrated’ God says: Cast all your cares on ME (I Peter 5:7 NIV)7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
You say: ‘I’m not smart enough’ God says: I give you wisdom (James 1:5 NIV)If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

never will I forsake you.”

A Fresh Start

Create in me a clean heart, O God,

And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10

With the fresh start of a New Year, it’s a great feeling to visualize the year ahead as a “clean slate” ~  a brand new period of time in which we can aspire to achieve certain goals, a renewed time of enthusiasm and expectations.  We look forward to the coming months with eager anticipation about what the next 365 days will bring.

The beginning of a New Year is also a good time to ask God to “clean house” in our hearts.  As we seek God’s desire in our lives for the coming year, we should also ask Him to clean our hearts and renew our spirits.  Perhaps there’s a build-up of sin in our lives that could hinder our efforts for Him.  There could be bitterness lodged in the cracks and crevices.  A thick coating of an unforgiving nature might be smothering our spirit.  There might be harmful habits or relationships that should be purged.    Or perhaps we are constantly replaying negative thoughts or lies in our minds that need to be erased.  Regardless of what type of cleansing is necessary, God is well-equipped to handle it.

The same God who created the heavens and earth can create a clean heart in you.  No matter how deep the “dirt” and “grime” might be in your life, your heavenly Father is capable of wiping it clean.  So call on God for some “housekeeping services” as we begin the new year.  Ask Him to create a clean heart in you.  After the thorough heart cleansing, your spirit will be renewed, refreshed, revived and ready for action in the year ahead.

Happy New Year!

See, I am doing a new thing!

Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

I am making a way in the wilderness

Isaiah 43:19

As the first new day dawns in the New Year, it is a great time to look forward and think about the possibilities a new year can bring.  Most of us start the year with ideas about what we would like to accomplish in the year to come.  (Exercise more, eat healthier, lose weight, organize our finances, clean out the closet, save more money, learn to do something new, mend fences with an old friend or relative, start a business…)  Regardless of what goals you have in mind, it’s a good idea to write these thoughts down and keep them as a reference throughout the year to remind us of our vision.

I encourage you to take 10 minutes today (or more) to reflect on the past year while looking forward to the year ahead.  But instead of just thinking about the things YOU want for yourself, ask God what HIS vision is for your new year.  Is there something on your heart that keeps surfacing in your thoughts?  God’s New Year’s Resolutions might be very different from our own New Year’s Resolutions.  His vision for you might sound something like this…feed the hungry, clothe the poor, house the homeless, volunteer at a food bank, donate money, clothing, food, or time to a worthy ministry, find a church to start attending, support a missionary, start a ministry, love your neighbors, forgive someone, go on a mission trip, help a widow, foster a child, use your talents to help a ministry, renew (or begin!) your relationship with Christ, etc…  This list is endless, and only you know what God has laid upon your heart.

God doesn’t ask us to do EVERYTHING.  We are all part of the body of Christ, each member doing its own valuable part, right where you are “planted.”  He may be asking you to do ONE THING that seems insignificant to you, but in His Kingdom that one thing can change eternity.  It’s no accident that you are reading this post today.  God has a plan for you, and He wants to use your life in great ways.  He has gifted you with unique abilities and talents, and He wants to show you exactly how your life fits into His big picture.  Take the first step today toward following through with whatever God has placed upon your heart.  Don’t let another year go by without accomplishing something divinely magnificent for His Kingdom.

Happy New Year!! May God bless you in the coming year…

God of Hope

May the God of Hope

Fill you with all

Joy and Peace

As you trust in Him,

So that you may overflow with Hope

By the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13

Cardinals Cold Toes

Do you need encouragement today?  The words of today’s verse offer Joy and Peace to those who place their trust in the living “God of Hope.”

Another passage refers to this living hope:

 [Praise to God for a Living Hope] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you. 1 Peter 1:3

So no matter what sort of trial you may be facing in your life, if you are a child of God, you have a living hope inside of you through your faith in Jesus Christ.  With Christ, you have the power to “overflow with Hope.”

Today, instead of focusing on whatever problems you may see in your path, turn your thoughts to our God of Hope and ask Him to fill you with Joy and Peace to the point that you are bubbling over and overflowing with Hope.  Your problems will fade in comparison to the peace and joy you feel in God’s presence.

Peace, Joy and Overflowing Hope be to you!
