1000 Goodbyes

Standard

I lose you in whispers, in fragments, in haze,

A slow aching drift through the passage of days.

Your laughter still lingers, yet fades from your eyes,

And I grieve you in echoes, in silent goodbyes.

~

I see you in glimpses – some moments so clear,

When time folds its hands and you’re suddenly here.

You reach for my hand, but the grasp slips away,

Like a tide pulling memories out further each day.

~

You search for the past like a book with lost pages,

A story rewritten, in sorrowful stages.

The moments you lose, I will tenderly keep,

Holding them safe as I mournfully weep.

~

Life’s tapestry woven with love through the years,

Unravels so slowly in heartache and tears.

Each thread that is lost holds a memory so dear,

Yet love still remains, though the fabric grows sheer.

~

I’ll gather the moments and keep them inside,

The laughter, the love, the years filled with pride.

I’ll hold all our memories for both me and you,

A keeper of stories, of all we once knew.

~

If you lose your way, if you feel alone,

I’ll always be your compass home.

A constant light when the path is unclear,

A love that whispers, “I’m always here.”

~

I walk this slow road, though burdened with pain,

Through shadows that linger, through sorrow’s refrain.

Through a thousand more losses, a thousand goodbyes –

Yet love, never fading, still brightens my skies.

~

Note from the Author:
This post is different from what I usually share here on Everyday Encouragement, but if you’ve ever loved someone with memory loss, you understand. Dementia is a slow, heartbreaking goodbye—one that comes in pieces, fading like whispers over time. If you’re walking this road, you’re not alone. When our own strength fails, God is our refuge, our steady rock, and the One who carries us through. His grace is enough, even in the hardest moments. May you find comfort in His presence and in love that never fades, even when memories do.

If you need an understanding friend, please feel free to reach out here. I may not have all the answers, but I can listen, pray for you, and walk alongside you in spirit. You are not alone. 💙

Loved Beyond Measure: A Divine Valentine

Standard

“We love because He first loved us.” – 1 John 4:19 (NIV)

Valentine’s Day can be a joyful occasion for some, but for others, it may bring feelings of loneliness or longing. Whether you’re celebrating with loved ones or finding yourself alone today, know this: you are never truly alone, because you are deeply loved by God. His love is steadfast, unchanging, and far greater than anything this world can offer.

A Love Beyond Measure

God’s love isn’t based on fleeting emotions or human conditions. It is constant, unwavering, and sacrificial. The world’s love can be imperfect, but God’s love is perfect and complete. “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) This kind of love isn’t earned; it is freely given.

From the very beginning, God has pursued us with His love. He loved us before we ever knew Him. He sent His Son, Jesus, to rescue us and restore our relationship with Him. No matter where we’ve been or what we’ve done, His love never fails. “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers… will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

When we truly grasp the depth of God’s love, it changes us. His love gives us security, identity, and purpose. It empowers us to love others selflessly, as He has loved us. On this Valentine’s Day, whether you are celebrating with a spouse, family, or friends—or even if you feel alone—know this: You are deeply loved by God.

Reflection:

Take a moment to reflect on God’s incredible love for you. How can you show His love to others today? Love is more than a feeling—it’s an action. Send a kind message, extend grace, forgive freely, or simply remind someone that they are loved.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your perfect and unfailing love. On this Valentine’s Day, help me to rest in the truth that I am fully known and deeply loved by You. Let Your love flow through me so that I can share it with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Additional Scriptures for Encouragement:

  • John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 – “Love is patient, love is kind…”
  • Zephaniah 3:17 – “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

Finding Jesus: A Christmas Miracle

Standard

Many years ago, in the rush and chaos of the Christmas season, I lost Jesus.

Now, before you jump to conclusions, let me explain. I didn’t lose Him spiritually—I lost a tiny baby Jesus figurine from a small crèche I displayed in my guest bathroom.

It was a great mystery. The figurine was glued down with the rest of the scene, so how could it go missing? One day He was there, and the next, He was gone. I searched high and low, but He was nowhere to be found. With three rambunctious sons, two energetic dogs, and a revolving door of holiday guests, there’s no telling what could have happened to the tiny figure.

I’m not really sure why I kept that “imperfect” manger year after year. I no longer displayed it since it was missing its main character, but I kept it tucked away in a box of other decorations that I faithfully displayed each Christmas. Each year, when I unpacked everything, I would come across that little manger and feel a pang of regret, wishing I could have found baby Jesus.

Then, today, something extraordinary happened—a Christmas miracle of sorts.

In the rush of holiday preparations—baking, wrapping, cooking, cleaning—I heard yelling from the hallway bathroom. My husband announced there was a “plumbing emergency,” and I raced to the scene to find water gushing onto the floor. Chaos ensued, and in my frustration, I threw towels onto the flooded floor and muttered some very “un-Christmasy” words.

As we finished cleaning up, I was on my hands and knees, wiping water that had seeped beneath the vanity, when I felt something like a small pebble under my rag. Curious, I swiped again, and a tiny object tumbled across the hardwood floor, emerging from under the cabinet. When I looked closer, I froze in disbelief, staring at the little figurine I thought was lost forever—it was baby Jesus!

In that moment, I felt a wave of elation—a mix of joy and relief. But it wasn’t just about finding the missing piece of my nativity. It was as though everything around me paused, and I truly saw Him—the One whose birth changed the world.

As I knelt there, holding that tiny figurine, I marveled at the timing. This could have happened any other time of the year, and I would have been thrilled. But the fact that it happened at Christmas felt divinely ironic. It was as if God was reminding me in a special way of the profound truth of this season: Jesus is here, He has come, and He is Immanuel, God with us.

I also realized – this was no coincidence. With God, nothing ever is. He orchestrates even the smallest moments to draw our hearts back to Him. Finding that figurine during the very season when we celebrate His coming was a powerful reminder that He is always present, even in life’s seemingly mundane events.

What struck me most was how He showed up in such an unexpected moment, right in the middle of our plumbing emergency—our mess. It reminded me of how the real baby Jesus showed up in the most humble and unexpected way. He didn’t come in royal grandeur or king-like splendor but in a smelly manger surrounded by barn animals and straw. Just as my figurine appeared in the middle of my messy situation, the true Savior entered our messy world to bring hope, peace, and redemption.

I also thought about how the world had long awaited and searched for our Savior. Centuries passed in longing and anticipation, and every prophet’s promise was like a glimpse of a manger missing its main character. But then, on that holy night, He came. The wait was over, and the world finally saw its King.

I thought of the shepherds in the fields, startled by an angel’s unexpected announcement of a Savior born for all people. They rushed to find Him, and when they did, they were overwhelmed with joy. They left that manger filled with awe and ran to tell everyone they met.

I thought, too, of the wise men, who traveled far and endured much, following a star to find the newborn King. Imagine their joy when they finally found Him, falling to their knees in worship and offering Him their treasures.

That same joy—real, eternal, transformative—is available to us today when we find Him, not as a figurine in a manger scene, but as the living Savior in our hearts and lives.

This Christmas, let’s pause to seek Him. Amid the wrapping paper, the recipes, and the rushed schedules, let’s remember that He is still here, waiting to be found by all who look for Him. And when we do, may we find the same joy, peace, hope, and love that the shepherds and wise men experienced long ago.

A Prayer for Today:

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for sending Your Son, Jesus to be Immanuel, God with Us. In the midst of our busyness, help us to pause and seek You. Fill our hearts with joy, peace, hope, and love that only You can give. Please help us to celebrate this Christmas with our eyes fixed on the Savior, the true reason for the season. In Jesus' Name We Pray, Amen.

p.s. Thank you that my little nativity is once again complete. The missing piece was my missing Peace.

Love Never Fails

Snow Valentine

And so faith, hope, love remain
[faith—conviction and belief respecting man’s relation to God and divine things;
hope—joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation;
love—true affection for God and man, growing out of God’s love for and in us],
these three; but the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13 (AMP)

LOVE

is patient.
is kind.
does not envy.
does not boast.
is not proud.
does not dishonor others.
is not self-seeking.
is not easily angered.
keeps no record of wrongs.
does not delight in evil.
rejoices with the truth.
always protects.
always trusts.
always hopes.
always perseveres.
never fails.
(1 Corinthians 13:4 – 8a)

Love never gives up.  It is kind and puts others first.  Love is not jealous or envious and doesn’t brag or boast.  It doesn’t force itself on others, nor fly off the handle. Love doesn’t keep score of the sins of others, and always takes pleasure in the truth.  Love always protects and trusts.  It always looks for the best in others and never looks back. Love keeps going to the end.  Love never ends.

Beloved

“Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in Him,
for He shields him all day long,
and the one the Lord loves rests between His shoulders.”

Deuteronomy 33:12b (NIV)

Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in Him:

As a child of God, you are dearly loved and cherished by your Heavenly Father.  You are a treasure to Him, and in Him you can rest peacefully and securely.  He will never leave you alone, and His faithful love for you will never end.   No matter what your age, this is God’s promise to His beloved child,”Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” Isaiah 46:4

He shields him all day long:

God is a shield of protection for His children.  In His protective care, we have nothing to fear.  “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8 (NIV)   “But You, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.” Psalm 3:3 (NIV)

The one the Lord loves rests between His shoulders:

As a child you might have run into your father’s arms if you were hurt or afraid, or even when you were tired and sleepy. In his arms you felt safe and secure, as though nothing could happen to you in that place of refuge. You could lay your head between his shoulders an totally relax, seemingly without a care in the world.  If you are going through a difficult time right now, imagine your Heavenly Father holding you in His loving arms.  Relax in His divine embrace and feel His heavenly hug. ~ His beloved child rests securely between His shoulders:

  • If you are afraid, He calms your fears.
  • If you are in pain, He comforts you.
  • If you are sick, He heals you.
  • If you are heart-broken, He consoles you.
  • If you are in danger, He protects you.
  • If you are weary, He gives you rest.
  • If you are discouraged, He encourages you.
  • If you are weary, He gives you rest…

Above All Else

Standard

Above all else,

guard your heart

for it is the wellspring of life.

Proverbs 4:23

Your heart…is it’s protection your top priority?    Why should this be such an extremely important task?  Take a moment to let the meaning of these words penetrate your mind:

Above all else… Make this the most important priority in your life.  Use this instruction as a guide to filter your thoughts, actions, affections, desires, dreams and feelings.  If your heart’s desires are set on the best that God has in mind for you ~the very purpose for which He created you ~  then you will stay on His desired path for your life, and you won’t veer off course.

…Guard Your Heart…  You guard things that are valuable to you, things that you treasure, things that you want to keep safe from harm, and things that you want to protect.   Your heart is what drives you to action, and it is the essence of who you are.  It’s the core of your being, and with it you connect to God and others.  Watch over your heart with vigilance, and set up protective boundaries around it so that the desires which flow from within are pure and in line with God’s will.  Consistently examine the information you take in visually (through television, movies, internet, social media, print, video games, email, texting, etc…) and audibly (through radio, cd’s, or other audio sources.) Diligently monitor the relationships in your life, and make sure that those with whom you surround yourself also want God’s best for your life.  Do not give your heart to anyone who could cause you to stumble or lead you astray.  Put up virtual signs within your heart which read, “NO DUMPING ALLOWED,” and don’t allow any trash to enter.  You make time for the things that you love and enjoy, so make sure that the things cherished inside your heart are from God and in line with His will.

…for it is the wellspring of life…. Imagine a pure spring deep within the earth.  Visualize its crystal clear waters bubbling up and flowing out to form the headwaters of a major river.  Similarly, your heart is the internal fountainhead, or wellspring, from which everything else in life flows.   If you fill your heart with pure, excellent and honorable things, those same types of  things will cascade out of it.  Don’t pollute the wellspring with dishonorable contaminants, because everything downstream will be toxic.

Your heart determines the course of life, and from your heart originates your destiny.  Above all else, watch over your heart; diligently guard and protect it because from a sincere and pure heart come the good and noble things of life ~ God’s best.

For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.  Proverbs 23:7a

Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.  Psalm 37:4

The Only Thing That Counts

Standard

only thing that counts

Out of 66 books, 1188 chapters, and 31,175 verses in the Holy Bible, it all boils down to this:  “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.”  Galatians 5:6b

Take a moment and allow these words to sink deep into your mind and your heart.  Meditate on their meaning and grasp the magnitude of their importance.  Essentially, this statement tells us that if we are NOT expressing our faith in God through our love for others, nothing else we are doing really matters.

Wherever you find yourself in life, God has specifically placed you there for a unique purpose that only you can fulfill. In essence you are on a mission from God each and every day of your life to express your faith through acts of love. This expression of love can take many forms:  kindness, respect, appreciation, involvement, time commitment, sharing, patience, giving, caring, or friendship.  Whether you’re a business executive, clerk, teacher, nurse, care taker, house keeper, bus driver, waitress, stay-at-home-mom, retiree, grandparent, student, etc.., you are an integral part of the body of Christ.  Imagine the difference we could make in an untold number of lives if each of us went about our days expressing our faith through love.

You can be totally filled with spiritual lessons, perhaps you can even quote verse after verse from the Bible, but if you are not expressing your faith in Jesus Christ through your outpouring of love for others, nothing else matters.

Tape this verse to your bathroom mirror, next to your bed, or on the dashboard of your car so that you can start each day with one main focus concerning the only thing that counts.  In fact, this is such a short statement that you could easily memorize those eleven words and use them as a filter for  your thoughts and a framework for  your actions throughout each day.

Essentially the only thing that counts is a summation of Jesus’ response to the question, “Which is the most important of all the commandments?”  Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’  The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.”  (Mark 12:28 – 31)  Love God, and express that love to your neighbor…it’s that simple.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.  James 1:22

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, Galatians 3:23

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.  If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Absolutely Nothing Can Separate Us From the Love of Christ

Standard

Sunsets 001

Can anything separate us from the love of Christ?

Can trouble

Suffering,

Hard times,

Hunger,

Nakedness,

Danger,

Or Death?

Roman 8:35 CEV

The life of a believer is not always perfect.  We face many of the same kinds of problems today that believers have endured throughout history such as hardship, trials, hunger, illness, suffering, heart break, abandonment, danger, and even death.   Difficult times could cause you to fear that Christ has abandoned you.  Yet His death on the cross is proof of His unconditional love for each one of us.

Romans 8: 38 – 39 gives us one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture:

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life,

neither angels nor demons,

neither the present nor the future,

nor any powers,

neither height nor depth,

nor anything else in all creation,

will be able to separate us from the love of God

that is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.” (NIV)

Absolutely Nothing can stop Christ’s constant presence with us, and ~ nothing ~ in all of creation can separate us from His never-ending, unchanging, limitless, unfathomable, and eternal love for us.  If we believe these overwhelming assurances, we will never fear, no matter what circumstances we face.
