In the Beginning…There was Hope
“The earth was formless and empty…and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” — Genesis 1:2
Sometimes the empty places in our lives are painfully real: an empty chair, a quiet house, a shattered dream, or a future that no longer looks the way we imagined. Darkness can settle over our hearts, leaving us unable to see what God could possibly do next.
But Genesis 1:2 reminds us that emptiness does not mean God is absent. Before the light appeared, the Spirit of God was already hovering over the darkness. The same word used for “hovering” is also found in Deuteronomy 32:11, where God’s care is pictured as an eagle “hovering” over its young in their nest.
That is what God did at creation—and it gives us a beautiful picture of what He can do in our lives.
When God encounters emptiness, He brings fullness. Where there is darkness, He shines light. Where there is disorder and chaos, He brings order and peace. And where there is barrenness, He can bring fruitfulness.
The same God who spoke light into creation can shine His light into our hearts. Paul makes this beautiful connection in 2 Corinthians 4:6: the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness has also made His light shine within us through Christ.
God may not restore our lives exactly as they were before. His work may be gradual, quiet, and different from what we expected. Yet He is still able to bring beauty from ashes, purpose from pain, and new fruitfulness from places that once appeared barren. Isaiah 61:3 describes those He restores as “oaks of righteousness”—a planting of the Lord that displays His splendor.
The empty places of our lives are not empty of God. His Spirit is still present. His voice is still powerful. And He is still creating something good.
A Prayer for Today:
Dear Lord, when my life feels empty, dark, or disordered, help me remember that You are present and working. Shine Your light into my heart, and bring new purpose and fruitfulness from the places I cannot restore on my own. In Jesus Name, Amen.
