Beyond Resolutions: A New Perspective for the New Year

Standard

“Then God said, ‘Let there be light-bearers (Sun, Moon, Stars) in the expanse of the heavens to separate day from night, and let them be useful for signs (tokens) [of God’s provident care], and for marking seasons, days and years.'” Genesis 1: 14 AMP

As we stand on the threshold of a new year, it’s easy to feel both the excitement and uncertainty of what lies ahead. We make plans, set resolutions, and look forward to the opportunities and challenges that a fresh start brings. But what if we approached the turning of the calendar not just with our own hopes and dreams, but with a deep sense of awe at how God has already gone before us, marking every moment with His faithful presence?

In Genesis 1:14-19, we see a powerful and often overlooked truth about time. On the fourth day of creation, God spoke into existence the lights in the sky, the sun, moon, and stars, and declared that they were “good.” These lights were not just to illuminate the earth but to “serve as signs (tokens) to mark sacred times, and days and years” (Genesis 1:14, Amplified Bible). In this moment, God created the very concept of time—days, seasons, and years—and deemed it good. The orderly passage of time was His perfect design, not an afterthought.

God’s Provident Care in the Heavens

As we read this passage, it’s awe-inspiring to realize that God, the Creator of the universe, intentionally placed the lights in the sky to serve as tokens of His providence. (Here, providence means providing for future needs or events, or exercising foresight and care in planning for the future.) Even before humanity existed, God made the heavens a visible reminder of His care and faithfulness. The sun, moon, and stars were not simply celestial objects; they were divine markers set in place to reflect God’s active presence in time.

It’s humbling to think that God wanted us to notice His handiwork in the heavens—signs that would not only provide light for the earth but also guide us through time. Each day, month, and year is a direct result of God’s deliberate and sustaining power. And as we look up at the stars or feel the warmth of the sun, we are reminded that time itself is a gift from a loving, providential Father.

A Fresh Perspective for the New Year

As we turn the page to a new year, it’s an opportunity to reframe our perspective on time. We no longer need to see the passing days simply as moments slipping away, like grains of sand through an hourglass. Instead, we can view each day, each month, as a sign of God’s ongoing care and faithfulness. The same God who created the sun to rule the day and the moon to rule the night is the one who has walked with us through every season, both light and dark.

And what’s even more amazing is that each and every day is a gift from our Heavenly Father — not just the first day of the year. Each new morning is a fresh start, a blank canvas for God to fill with His purpose. We don’t know what the day will bring, but God already does. He’s there ahead of us, ready to walk us through whatever lies ahead. The sun rises each morning, and as it does, it’s as if God is saying, “Here is your day, a new gift filled with potential.”

God’s Unseen Presence

Even on the stormy, cloudy days when we can’t see the lights in the sky, we know they are still there. The sun, moon, and stars haven’t gone anywhere; they’re simply hidden by the clouds. In the same way, even when we don’t feel God’s presence, we can be sure He’s still there. Just as the lights in the sky continue to shine even when they’re not visible to us, God is always watching over us, guiding us, and walking beside us. Whether the skies are clear or clouded over, His love and care never change. He is constant, unshaken by the storms of life. The same God who created the sun to rule the day and the moon to rule the night is the one who has walked with us through every season, both light and dark.

Trusting God with the Year Ahead

What would it look like to approach the new year with this understanding—that every day, week, and month is a token of God’s care, a gift from the Creator who has been guiding us through all the days that have passed before? As we face the challenges and opportunities of this year, let’s remember that we don’t walk through it alone. The lights in the sky remind us of God’s providence—His constant, loving presence as we move forward.

In the coming year, let’s strive to live with a sense of gratitude for the time God has entrusted to us. Whether we’re facing joyous celebrations or difficult trials, each moment is an opportunity to trust in God’s perfect timing, knowing that He is already ahead of us, guiding us through every season of life.

Instead of a New Year’s Resolution, Embrace a Year of Gratitude

Instead of setting a traditional New Year’s resolution, why not choose to live the year with a focus on gratitude? Rather than simply making a list of goals, let’s intentionally recognize the blessings each day brings. You can create a daily habit of reflecting on God’s goodness by writing down one thing you are grateful for every day. This practice will not only help you cultivate a spirit of thankfulness but also allow you to see the hand of God at work in the everyday moments of your life. Whether it’s the beauty of a sunrise, a kind word from a friend, or God’s guidance through a challenge, you’ll begin to notice and appreciate His faithfulness in ways you might have missed before.

By the end of the year, you’ll have 365 moments of gratitude that serve as a testimony to God’s providence and love. This simple act can transform your perspective, helping you see that no matter what each day holds, it is a gift from a loving Creator, always filled with something to be thankful for.

A New Year, A New Beginning

As we embrace the new year, let’s hold onto the truth that God is not just present in our moments but actively shaping and guiding time itself. Each new day, each season, is a chance to align ourselves with His purpose and reflect on the tokens of His providence that shine brightly in the heavens above. Let’s look at our calendars with fresh eyes, seeing them as reminders of the Creator’s faithful care and the eternal rhythm of His plan.

A Prayer for the New Year

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gift of this new year and the opportunity to walk with You each day. Help us to see each moment as a precious gift from Your hand, filled with purpose and meaning. Teach us to number our days aright, that we may live with wisdom and gratitude for all You have done and continue to do. May Your providence guide us, and may we trust in Your faithful presence, both in the light and in the storms. We ask that You help us embrace each day with open hearts, thankful for the blessings You’ve given and trusting in Your perfect timing.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Creation Points Us To the Creator

As you do not know the path of the wind,
    or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb,
so you cannot understand the work of God,
    the Maker of all things.

Ecclesiastes 11:5 (NIV)

Each tiny piece of God’s beautiful creation exemplifies the work of a master artisan. Take a few moments today to get outside and observe some of the intricate details in nature, and you’ll be amazed at the magnificent workmanship of God ~ The Maker of all Things.  There are so many awe-inspiring mysteries in nature that we will never fully comprehend ~ like how a baby’s body is formed in a mother’s womb or how a caterpillar metamorphosizes within a cocoon into a beautiful butterfly. Nature plays a very important role in God’s grand plan.  In fact the very first verse of the Bible tells us that “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”  Genesis 1:1 (NIV)  And since the very beginning, He has used the creation to point us to the Creator.

For ever since the creation of the world, His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks).”  Romans 1:20 (AMP)

The marvelous creation not only teaches us about God’s divine nature and infinite wisdom, but it also glorifies God on its own.  That fact should inspire us to do the same through worship and praise of our Heavenly Father.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky displays his handiwork. Day after day it speaks out; night after night it reveals his greatness.  There is no actual speech or word, nor is its voice literally heard.  Yet its voice echoes throughout the earth; its words carry to the distant horizon. In the sky he has pitched a tent for the sun. Like a bridegroom it emerges from its chamber; like a strong man it enjoys running its course. It emerges from the distant horizon, and goes from one end of the sky to the other; nothing can escape its heat.” (Psalm 19:1 – 6)

The Creator takes great care in watching over His creation, yet nothing in all of creation is more valuable to Him than you.  He designed you as a one-of-a-kind original, and He knows each detail of your life…including your name and number of hairs on your head!  Never doubt that God loves you dearly and  is watching over each moment of your life.

Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows.  (Matthew 10:29 – 31)

Are You Listening?

God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;

He does great things beyond our understanding.

He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’

and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’

Job 37:5-6 (NIV)

“…Are you listening?

                              Have you noticed all this?

                                                                   Stop in your tracks!

                                                                                             Take in God’s miracle-wonders!

Do you have any idea how God does it all, how He makes bright lightning from dark storms, how He piles up the cumulus clouds—all these miracle-wonders of a perfect Mind?”  Job 37:14-16 (MSG)

Nothing can compare to God.  By spending time observing the majestic scenes and intricate details of God’s creation, we are reminded of His awesome power in every aspect of our lives.   Life always creates more questions than we have answers, and we must continually turn to Our Heavenly Father for answers, guidance and fresh insights.  When He speaks, we must be ready to hear His message.

Take a moment to “stop in your tracks,” find a quiet place and listen to the marvelous voice of God.

“Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;
    you formed me in my mother’s womb.
I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking!
    Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
    I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
    you know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,
    how I was sculpted from nothing into something.
Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;
    all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared
    before I’d even lived one day.”

Psalm 139: 13 – 16 MSG

You are a special creation ~ marvelously made in body and soul by God!  No one else on Earth is quite like you.  God shaped you from nothing into something, and knit you together, bit by bit, into the extraordinary individual that you are. Like an open book, He watched you grow from conception to birth; He knows the rhythm of your heart, every bone in your body, and every hair on your head.

God created you with a unique purpose in mind, and each one of your days on Earth have been ordained by your Creator.   In fact, the days of your life were all prepared for you before you even lived one day.  God knows you intimately, inside and out.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
Their starry host by the breath of His mouth.
He gathers the waters of the sea into jars;
He puts the deep into storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord;
Let all the people of the world revere Him.
For He spoke, and it came to be;
He commanded, and it stood firm.

Psalm 33:6 – 9

When I watch beautiful displays of nature, I am reminded of Jeremiah’s affirmation to the Lord:

“Ah, Sovereign Lord, You have made the heavens and the earth with your outstretched arm.

Nothing is too hard for you!”

 Jeremiah 32:17

If God can create the heavens with His word and the starry host with His breath, He can speak life into any situation that you or I face here on the earth He created.  Absolutely nothing is too hard for Him.  Since He also created everything in the earth…including you, He knows – and cares about – everything in your life.  If you face a problem that seems insurmountable, turn to the God who gathers the waters of the sea into jars for help.

 Your problem is not bigger than God.

Rest Secure

Standard

“Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in Him

for He shields him all day long,

and the one the LORD loves rests between His shoulders.”

Deuteronomy 33:12 NIV

We live in a fast paced, action oriented world. There are days when I feel like I am so busy that I can’t even take a moment to “come up for air.” It seems as though there is never enough time in the day to accomplish everything on my plate of responsibilities. Yet God demonstrated for us the importance of rest. When He had finished all the work He had been doing of creating the universe and everything in it, He rested.

“For six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them,

But He Rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the LORD blessed the Sabbath and made it holy.”

Exodus 20:11

If the Creator of the Universe rested from His work, then it should not surprise us to know that we also need to rest. In fact, rest is so important to God that He commanded His children to set aside one day each week for pure, restorative rest. Not only did God know that we need a day like this each week to revive and rejuvenate our bodies, but He also wanted His children to use it as a day of worship and remembrance. “Above all, keep my Sabbaths, the sign between me and you, generation after generation, to keep the knowledge alive that I am the God who makes you holy…There are six days for work but the seventh day is Sabbath, pure rest, holy to God…Yes, because in six days God made the heavens and the Earth and on the seventh day He stopped and took a long, deep breath.” Exodus 31:12-17 MSG

“Come to Me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

After a period of exertion or labor, rest is a blessing. It is refreshing and rejuvenating, and it is a relief from any type of weariness. As we take time to quiet our bodies and spirits, God desires for us to spend time remembering and focusing on all the amazing things He has done for us.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10

God can also use this time of repose to speak to us. It is difficult for Him to gain our attention during the hectic activity of your daily life. When you sit still in His presence, you will hear the calming whisper of His voice.

“My Presence will go with you and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:14

When your time of purposeful quiescence is over, you will be revived and renewed, ready to face new challenges and strengthened for your responsibilities. By taking time to periodically observe a day of rest, you will be physically stronger and mentally sharper. You will be better equipped to accomplish your goals and purposes than if you did not take the time to rest.

Listen to your Creator in regards to the importance of rest. Your Heavenly Fathers knows what is best for His children.
